Boilers rarely fail without warning. Knowing the difference between an annoyance and a real safety issue saves both money and risk.

## Turn it off and ring an RGI installer immediately

A smell of gas, a yellow or orange flame instead of a crisp blue one, black sooty marks around the casing, or condensation and headaches when the boiler is running are all reasons to stop using the appliance and call a registered installer. Do not wait for the annual service.

## Signs you have time to plan around

Pressure dropping repeatedly, banging or kettling noises, radiators taking far longer to heat, hot water running lukewarm, or the boiler locking out and needing a reset are all telling you the system is under strain. These usually give weeks of notice.

## Age matters

Past roughly fifteen years, parts availability becomes the deciding factor. Spending several hundred euro on a heat exchanger for an appliance that old rarely makes sense.

## The cheapest fix

An annual service. It is the only reliable way to catch a failing component before it strands you mid-winter, and most manufacturers require it to keep the warranty valid.
